Land Acquisition literally means acquiring of land for various infrastructure and economic growth by government/government agency, after paying a government fixed compensation in lieu of losses incurred by land owner(s) due to surrendering of his/their land to the concerned government agency.
The land acquisition act of 1894 was created with the expressed purpose of facilitating the government’s acquisition of privately held land for public purposes. The word "public purpose", as defined in the act, refers to the acquisition of land for putting up educational institutions or schemes such as housing, health or slum clearance, roads, culverts, reservoirs, canals, military camps, railways, industries apart from the projects for rural planning or formation of sites. The land owned and occupied by the private citizens and non-governmental organizations are subjected to acquisition. Acquisition activities are carried out outside revenue department also, while doing so these agencies appoint Special Land Acquisition Officers for the purpose. These agencies would use a clone of the land acquisition act with a different name. The stages and notification are called by different section names but the result of the activity would be same. Since 2011, the country has proposed and its parliament has been considering a new law, named Land Acquisition and Rehabilitation and Resettlement Bill.
